A place of encounter

The Esplanade in Gmunden stretches picturesquely from Cafe Kandur to the Gmunden Yacht Club. This beautiful promenade on the shores of Lake Traunsee invites you to take a leisurely stroll and offers a magnificent view of the clear water and the surrounding mountains. Magnificent villas, historic buildings and charming cafés can be found along the esplanade, inviting you to linger.

History: Our esplanade was built between 1851 and 1862 under Mayor Johann Tagwerker and was an important facility for the then emerging tourism in the spa town of Gmunden. Most of the material needed to fill the lake was mined from the Hochkogel and some of it was brought to the construction site in specially built chutes. The material freed up by the demolition of the Upper Gate Tower in 1854 was also used to fill in the esplanade. Planted with two rows of chestnut trees, the construction of the esplanade was completed in 1862.
